The lands of the Mojave and Great Basin contain many petroglyphs or rock carvings, which hold a special place in my soul. They contain writings and ancient texts of our ancestors, a legacy that is continued by our Paiute elders sharing their stories. Indigenous peoples with allies of all backgrounds have worked together to protect Southern Paiute ancestral lands. The federal government’s designation of national monuments in Southern Nevada has brought communities together. We identify with these places because it is who we are, as Paiute, and as defenders of the sacred Too-Weep (Mother Earth). Our ancestors whisper the stories to us, it’s up to us to carry the message. The work is a piece of the puzzle from “Newspaper Rock,” a petroglyph site located at Gold Butte National Monument. The message has been recorded in this art as a way of remembering the past and honoring the future.
