These three sisters are special, the first of the children that made Nuwu Art Studios their playground. They've been growing up in urban environments whereas their father grew up on the Colville reservation. As a youth, I faced issues of identity on the reservation: racism and colorism at a very young age. Being of mixed ancestry, I was often othered and made to feel small because my skin and hair were not as dark as some of my Native relatives. Thankfully, I had family and others to give me direction in the Pow Wow circle, a place I felt belonging. These girls remind me of myself in many ways and I was honored to create them Pow Wow regalia and teach dance steps. We don’t want this generation to go through the same hardships we went through, so we cultivate positive spaces for the youth. It truly takes a community.
