My daughters' and my Pow Wow contest numbers are stitched onto the work that mimics a women’s Northern Traditional yoke. There are red ribbons that hang from the canvas/contest numbers as well as black fringe and jingle cones. I have drawn and painted elks tooth designs from plastic laser cut elk tooth decals I had created. There are nods to the lazy stitch, or lane stitch style of beadwork painted on the mixed media work. We Don’t Dance for Money originated from the love of the Pow Wow circle. That circle is sacred, to step into the circle and is to dance for people who can’t dance. We dance for the elderly, for the sick, for those that need prayers, for strength. Pow Wow is beautiful but it is also a competition for a cash prize where it can get very competitive, and for large sums of money. The true competition is not with other dancers but with the drum, the challenge is to keep up with the drum. We Don’t Dance for Money creates conversation around the idea of Pow Wow dance.
